In the early days of RVs, brass pipes and fittings were used to create the plumbing structure. Unfortunately, they were not flexible, not cost-effective, and didn't have the best of connections. RV manufacturers then switched to PEX and gray "quest" tubing, plastic insert fittings, and copper crimp rings. While they solved the problem of cost-efficiency and flexibility, the connections still weren't the best. What would often happen is the plastic inserts would crack from the pressure of the crimp rings, the crimp rings could be over or under tightened, or they could be applied with the wrong tool, creating an only half-decent connection.
